Soap opera yaoi has given the world more than people realise. It gave Britain their second televised gay kiss on national tv (but the first known and acknowledged gay kiss). Soap operas broke the boundaries with having an Aids storyline happen to a straight man when the epidemic was still at large (Eastenders) and having a trans character be a regular for years with a storyline in which she struggled to marry the love of her life because transgender marraige wasn't yet legalised in England (Coronation Street). This storyline helped push the law in the right direction and caused transgender marriage to become legal. British soap operas helped thousands of people to gain the courage to come out in England with their many storylines showing both younger and older queer people struggling to come out.
